Goal
Convert
.vtt transcript files into clean text, upload to Copilot, remove timestamps, and generate a summary of the class or meeting. Then refine the summary by asking Copilot to adjust details.Steps
1. Prepare the Transcript
- Locate your
.vttfile (commonly generated by video conferencing tools like Zoom or Teams). - Rename the file extension:
- Change
.vtt→.txt
(Right-click → Rename → Replace.vttwith.txt)
- Change
2. Upload to Copilot in teams
- Open Copilot in teams or your browser - Chat | M365 Copilot
- Drag and drop the
.txtfile into the chat window or use the Upload option.
3. Remove Timestamps
- After upload, ask Copilot:
Remove all timestamps and speaker labels from this transcript. - Copilot will return a clean version of the text.
4. Generate a Summary
- Next, prompt Copilot:
Summarize this transcript into key points and action items. - For classes, you can specify:
Summarize this as lecture notes with main topics and subtopics. - For meetings:
Summarize this as meeting minutes with decisions and next steps.
5. Refine the Summary
- If the summary includes unnecessary details, ask:
Remove any small talk and keep only technical discussion. - Or:
Make this summary more concise and remove repetitive points.
Pro Tips
- Use specific instructions for tone and format:
- “Make it bullet points.”
- “Highlight deadlines.”
- “Create a study guide from this.”
- You can iterate until the summary meets your needs.
