When traveling internationally, you can continue to access your HUC email, Microsoft 365 applications, Teams, OneDrive, and other cloud services. Microsoft may occasionally request additional verification when you sign in from a new country or device, so it is important to prepare before you leave. Microsoft states that sign-ins from new locations can trigger additional identity verification as a security measure.

Before You Travel

To avoid access issues while abroad:

  • Verify that Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is working on your account.
  • Confirm that the Microsoft Authenticator app is installed on your phone and can approve sign-in requests.
  • Make sure your recovery phone number and alternate email address are up to date.
  • Test signing in to Outlook, Teams, and Microsoft 365 before departure.
  • Bring a device that you regularly use to access HUC systems.

Internet Connectivity While Traveling

Recommended Options

For the best security and reliability:

  1. Use your mobile phone's international data plan or hotspot.
  2. Use a personal travel hotspot/eSIM service.
  3. Use trusted hotel or business internet connections when necessary.

Avoid Public Wi-Fi

Public Wi-Fi networks in airports, coffee shops, restaurants, train stations, and other public locations present increased security risks.

Whenever possible:

  • Do not access sensitive information over public Wi-Fi.
  • Do not conduct financial transactions on public networks.
  • Do not download confidential files while connected to unknown networks.
  • Use a trusted personal hotspot instead.

If public Wi-Fi is your only option:

  • Connect only to legitimate networks provided by the venue.
  • Ensure websites show HTTPS encryption.
  • Sign out of applications when finished.
  • Avoid accessing highly sensitive systems until you have a more secure connection.

In-Flight Wi-Fi

Most airline Wi-Fi services support access to Outlook, Teams, and Microsoft 365. Performance may vary depending on the airline and flight location, but basic email and collaboration functions generally work when internet service is available.

What If Microsoft Blocks My Sign-In?

This is uncommon, but Microsoft may request additional verification if it detects a sign-in from an unfamiliar location. In most cases:

  • Approve the MFA request in Microsoft Authenticator.
  • Complete any additional verification prompts.
  • Retry the sign-in.

Microsoft's security systems are designed to protect accounts from unauthorized access and may challenge sign-ins originating from new countries or networks.

Need Help?

If you are unable to access your HUC account while traveling, submit a ticket through the IT Service Desk or contact ITS as soon as you are able. Include:

  • Your location
  • The application you are trying to access
  • A screenshot of any error message
  • A callback number or alternate email address

Preparing before departure is the best way to ensure uninterrupted access to HUC resources while you travel.
